Tallevast
Tallevast, Florida, is an unincorporated community in Manatee County. It is part of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located near Sarasota Bay. It is situated between “old” Florida Highway 301 and “new” Florida Highway 301. The town is approximately two square miles and has fewer than 80 homes. There are about seven streets that cross the town, a post office, three churches, and a grocery store.
There is currently a state-of-the-art water treatment facility in Tallevast operated by Lockheed Martin. It processes groundwater from over 70 wells. The plant then dumps the treated water into surrounding wetlands. The plant was purchased by Lockheed Martin in 1997. However, despite the plant’s agreement to clean up any pollution, the residents of Tallevast were not told of any potential contamination until 2003.
The groundwater in Tallevast was contaminated with weapons grade beryllium during the Cold War. When the groundwater was tested, the results showed that the beryllium concentration was three times the acceptable limit. The beryllium was found in the soil around ponds. The FDEP did not dispute Tetra Tech’s assertion that there were no private wells near Tallevast. However, the Tallevast community was told of the contamination only after the groundwater was tested.
Although the Tallevast community was largely insulated from the civil amenities offered by state and local governments, it was one of the last towns in Manatee County to receive basic services. For example, it was one of the last towns to receive telephone lines and sidewalks.
Tallevast residents say they have been betrayed by state authorities. They say the state failed to hold Loral Corporation accountable for the contamination that affected the community. They also say they were left blindsided by a large development project. They are asking for a satisfactory recompense from the state. But officials from Manatee County claim that the information about Project Woodworking is protected by non-disclosure agreements.
It is believed that the contamination occurred in an underground plume of solvents spread over 200 acres. The plume is still being monitored today. The state also knew about the contamination, but failed to notify the Tallevast community. The Tallevast community did not receive satisfactory compensation from the state.
The Tallevast community was also obstructed from educational opportunities. Despite the community’s efforts to build social infrastructure, such as schools and churches, they were not permitted to join the county’s school system.
